Bola Ahmed Tinubu (born March 29, 1952) is a Nigerian politician and the 16th president of Nigeria, having taken office in 2023. He was previously the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and a senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic.
Tinubu grew up in southwestern Nigeria and later studied accounting at Chicago State University. Returning to Nigeria in the early 1990s, he worked as an accountant at Mobil Nigeria before entering politics. He was elected senator for Lagos West in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party but became an activist after the military dissolved the Senate in 1993, advocating for the return of democracy with the National Democratic Coalition.
In 1999, Tinubu won the Lagos State gubernatorial election as a member of the Alliance for Democracy and was re-elected in 2003. After leaving office in 2007, he played a significant role in founding the All Progressives Congress in 2013 and was elected president of Nigeria in 2023.
